Is the firmware official or custom? And from which to which did you update?

It should work fine if it's official. Perhaps a problem while flashing? My suggestion would be to reflash it again.

PS. now my auto correct is so annoying, re correcting all different and keyboards look different...
On top of all that once this phone was upgraded, I had blank screens and the backup I made didn't work. Had to recreate all my shortcuts of where everything was. Any suggestions on this? That was major pain in bottom lol
Also worth of mention is, last firmware i updated to from out of box version and used for a while looked a bit different after I did a erase and restore to factory default. I'm tempted to do that again so maybe this 3 version of firmware (4.0.3) looks different again ?

Blank screens? You mean screen freeze? What did You use to backup everything? And where were they backed up?

What do you mean different? After a factory reset, your 4.0.3 should look the same.

It is always better to make it obey you and make it work the way you want it rather than giving up and throwing it away. :D And it looks like just a simple upgrade malfunction. Reflashing (it that's the case) should fix it.

I upgraded factory with first upgrade, used it for a while then did reset cause I was getting weird 'you won am iPad' messages (I thought it was virus) then once I reset it, things were different.
I'm not sure exactly how this works... I presume the firmware is like an IS .. Like iOS I guess... Each update contains a new version that replaced old one with all the new improved changes?
