Watchdog should still be used. It doesn't kill apps automatically, it just alerts you when an app is hogging cpu. I have it set to alert me when an app is using more than 30% of the cpu, which is what you need to be aware of. So if an app is misbehaving, watchdog tells me and I can kill it if I want or let it run.
