Help! A New Icon Just Magically Appeared on My Cell Phone Today
Before I state my problem, I should probably mention that I'm a newly registered member for this Android forum; however, I have viewed many posts and threads on this forum previously and found it either helpful, interesting, or news-worthy. So, with that said, I hope that I am posting (and posing) my question and problem in the proper manner for this forum's site.
Today (Saturday, May 26, 2012), late in the day, I noticed that an app which I have no recollection of downloading just appeared on my phone, which is a Samsung Fascinate running on Android O.S. 2.2.2. I have attached two screen shots to show you what the icon looks like. It appeared to the right of my "Google Play Store" app. It looks like a shopping bag with the words "APPS" on the shopping bag. Underneath the icon is the wording: "DROID App". I cannot tell you whether the second word is "App," "Apps," "App Store," "Appstore," or whatever...because I cannot read it and I will not open it because I don't know what this icon is for.
I've attempted to find out what it is via the Internet, but can find no information about it. I cannot locate anything by that name in the list of applications which are running and/or installed on my phone (using Systems/Applications as well as "Root Explorer"). (Please note: My phone is not rooted because I don't know exactly how to root a phone; but I am somewhat computer savvy and really like the "Root Explorer" app. It has helped me many times in locating a file and/or folder on my device.)
I am hoping that someone can tell me whether this is a legitimate app. If it is not, how can I possibly remove (since I cannot find its location on my cell phone)? I use my smartphone quite excessively. Without revealing my age (as no lady should
, I am somewhat young, but am disabled. On most days, I spend about a third of my day lying in bed. It can get quite boring, so my cell phone is used heavily for reading, watching shows, listening to music, sending emails, writing, working with photos, gaming (a little), searching stuff on the Internet, writing notes to myself, and much, much, much more.
I wish to thank whomever can assist me, in advance, for the technically knowledge and experience I am certain will aid in answering my question and helping me to solve this issue.
Have a great night. Thanks again.

Howdy flwr44, and welcome to the forum!
Does this mysterious app show up in your app list (Settings-Applications)? I'll do some digging in the meantime...
Edit: n/m...just re-read your post..researching..

There is a dev called DROID.Apps in the market..check out and see if any of these apps are ones you use:

Hmm..not much turning up on a cursory search...I'd d/l Lookout Ad Detector, and run it, looking for suspicious apps with lots of ad services built-in.

The last time I ended up with crapware on my phone, I had d/l'd a 'free' ebook, which had tons of ad services included. Report back your results!

Welcome to the site. I think this is suspicious. I would get rid of it. Wonder how your phone got it.

Yep, that's the same icon I've had appear on my Cyanogenmod SIII too.
It's not an app. It launches a website in my default browser. I don't let that load. It is not a widget.
Attempting to remove the "Get Apps" icon crashes Trebuchet launcher. Changing to another launcher enables icon removal but so far icon has reappeared.
