Ringtone & notification issues

Hi folks - Newbie here (and to android phones) and I'm not that techno minded!
I've got a Samsung Galaxy ACE, I've got my ringtone sorted, so I know about the SDCard/media/ringtone or notificaiton files and storing them.
However, I want to change my notification tone. I can pull a made tone (from an app) and it will appear in the list of tones. I'll set it as my notification tone. Now if I get a med minder notification, to do list lite or my battery is running low, it uses the notification tone I set it to, but if I get a text it still uses the original tone the phone was set to???!!
I know it sound wierd, but I'll text myself get the pants Samsung tone, check and it'll be the tone I made, med minder goes off, it's the one I want, then text again, Samsung tone.

Is this my phone is faulty? I have got handcent sms, but haven't fully worked out how to block the notifications for the text messages set in the phone to only receive them in the handcent app, but it would be nice just use my original texts in the phone and have my own notifications!

Any help would be great as tried a few places and got no answers.

Check your messaging app and see if you have it set for default or your custom ringtone.
