Ok, thanks wicked, I updated the OP with the direct link to universal androot, which I downloaded and linked to from my dropbox. Hopefully between that and z4 we got everyone covered.

I'm unrooted, although I'm running Launcher Pro and that seemed to solve virtually all the quirks I disliked about the stock TouchWiz UI on my Fascinate. I found this thread very useful, but my only remaining hesitancy with rooting is potentially bricking my phone and voiding my warranty if I do have to take the phone in to Verizon for an unrelated issue (hardware related, for instance). In reality, how easy would it be to reset a really screwed up rooted phone to factory settings?

Also, the only reason I would be interested in rooting would be to have a completely stripped-down, bare bones Android device. Although I would be comfortable doing so, I'm not particularly interested in pushing the limits of my phone or trying out new things.

Everything you want can be easily accomplished.

As far as you are concerned about setting it back to factory. Its easy, you can SBF or use maderstcok. If the hardware was so screwed up that you couldn't even do that, then its too screwed up for Verizon to know anything either.

What difference does it make if its rooted and smashed into a million pieces... or water damaged. They will never know.

Just keep the stock boot logo. Because that's probably as far as they will get if your phone is screwed.

WugFresh my only real concern that I have is creating a backup with a Samsung Mesmerize because the tool says it is only for Droid x and Droid2 phones? What can I use for my phone.

Hmm... as a Droid-X user myself I am not 100% sure of an answer to your concern at this moment. I will have to investigate or hopefully someone who knows about that more than me will chime in.
