Android Apps and Their Permissions

I see that some of the android apps have so many permissions until I am confused.

Apps like Handcent, Whatsapp and Go SMS Pro...So many permissions...Are they really safe to be used ?

I think its just to keep the asses of the dev covered for when they get sued for PIP etc.
I try not to over think things, and even if they did do something with my info, as long as I have nothing to hide I feel Ok.

Yes,you can use the,they are safe,I have used Handcent in my machine.
