How To Make Flashing Less Painful?

Ok, I'm kind of a noob, but I've flashed Roms quite a bit. I'm fairly decent at it now. Just a big question, maybe it's complicated, I don't know. When I flash a new Rom, what can I do to keep as many customizations as possible. I always do a tibu and get my apps back. How about individual ringtones, system sounds that I have already set, maybe even home screen layouts? Messages and email settings would be nice also, like notification preferences. The native email client always needs to be set up all over again. What do all of you pros do? I would assume that you don't sit there for hours like I do trying to get things back the way I had them.
