Port your Number to Google Voice -

It seems the ability to port your current mobile number into Google Voice is slowly but surely being implemented, they will be charging a one time fee of $20.00 - Let us know if this option pop's up in your Google Voice Account - Also be on the lookout for Google Voice for the iPhone

I am not sure - maybe Google is going to become their own carrier, I guess we will know more as time goes on

Google becoming a phone carrier? I can definitely see that happening.

The second option is because if you port your number to Google, then your number has to be purchased from the carrier it's coming from... then since that same number can't exist on Google AND the carrier it would mean the end of your contract on the specified carrier. If you're not under contract and the line is still active on the carrier, then there won't be any ETF fees, but the line will be canceled on the carrier and transferred to Google. I most definitely don't see Google ramping their own network any time soon.

If you cancel your service before doing this, then there's no guarantee that you will get the number you had because as soon as you cancel service on the carrier side, your old number goes into the "avaliable" number pool.
