The first OEM that publicly states that they're leaving room for people to tinker, will sell a boatload of phones. If the enthusiasts love the phones, they tell people about it, turning into a grapevine! Samsung didn't publicize it in the Galaxy S, but they sure didn't lock anything down, and for that they've got their loyal following from the Dev community.

I am torn between the two - if stock is done right then there should be no need for a custom ROM - although it does take away most of the fun -

I still have faith in the community, they have done it before with the DX and D2 - although not 100% Custom ROM's, but hopefully that is still to come

A couple of guys with inside info say that Bionic and Atrix are more locked down because more security is possible with these next generation processors. If you thought the X was locked down, wait until you see this.

When has Moto ever done stock right? Except for the OG Droid...

Its Moto trying to act like Apple. I see Vizio coming up and being a major player in the mobile electronics field. They'll fill the niche that Moto leaves.

Ditto. I like what they're doing with the integrated linux distro on the Atrix, but they've never gotten a stock firmware image right, IMO, since the original Droid.

I run a custom ROM to get all of the tweaks and performance that wasn't included when I purchased the device - if stock is "done right" then these tweaks might not be necessary - I am not referring to stock being done right as in an unlocked bootloader, we all know the D1 was and quite possibly still is the greatest device ever made, no arguments there - I am still rockin' mine

^^ That's what I was talking about. Since the OG Droid all their phones have needed tweaks imo. The OG Droid was great stock. Although I am currently running CM, I think it was ok stock. BLUR is garbage. Maybe the new one on the Bionic will be ok but I doubt it. They need pull down power controls like the Galaxy phones. Why can't they add functionality, not just social networking?
