Verizon 4G map set to grow as new cities set for LTE announced

Verizon 4G is expanding to more markets. Verizon Wireless announced today that it will build on the 39 4G LTE metro areas previously launched in 2010. The company hopes to blanket several hundred U.S. cities to build the nation’s largest 4G network by the end of 2012.
The Verizon 4G network reaches one-third of the US population, but Verizon plans to have its LTE network supporting most of the 300 million-plus residents by the end of the year. The HTC Thunderbolt is currently the only 4G device on the Verizon network, but several other phones and tablets will join the roster soon. Here is a list of the cities slated to get Verizon 4G this year. An asterisk next to the name means that city was previously announced.

The announcement comes on the heels of AT&T’s admission that it plans to buy T-Mobile USA largely to use T-Mobile’s AWS spectrum for the budding an LTE network. Verizon makes it a point to note that its “premium 700 MHz spectrum” will be available in rural areas without needing to purchase any rivals, and will even partner with regional communications companies in rural areas to build towers that enable 4G in those areas.

I made the list, too. Now if Verizon would just get some high-end phones (instead of letting the competition have them all), we'd be all set.
