[Rumor] Sprint Switching to LTE Comes Closer to Reality

Almost a month ago, on our sister-site at SprintDroids.com, we shared an industry rumor about Sprint's, "Project Leapfrog", in which Sprint was already laying the foundation toward changing over to LTE, away from WiMAX. New industry intel seems to suggest that "Project Leapfrog" is coming even closer to reality, and that an official announcement may be forthcoming fairly soon. Here's a quote from the PhoneArena article,
"During a press tour of the facility that he oversees, Geoff Martin, (manager of operations at the carrier's M2M Collaboration Centre in Sillicon Valley), commented on Sprint's alleged switch to LTE stating that there was a “high likelihood” of the technology being adopted by the carrier “in one flavor or another” and that “announcements will be made soon.”
As always, we will keep you informed as more details emerge.

Maybe they're expecting a vzw takeover.

I don't. It's time to stop the crazed acquisition mentality, and start fostering more actual competition! Never again should the phrase "too big to fail" be heard in this country. IMHO.

I dont think that they will merge or that sprint will be bought out. Its just expensive for sprint to operate 3 networks; iden(push to talk), 3g and their 4g wimax. Also wimax has higher initial costs that LTE. But down the line they both equal out.

iDEN is being phased out... Sprint is fielding a CDMA based solution right now. They just have to get latency in check. Latency on iDEN was always amazing... that's what made it the gold standard for PTT networks. Once they have iDEN gone, they can push a software update to their CDMA/iDEN hybrids that will switch PTT functionality to CDMA. That will significantly drop network maintenance costs.

Plus they just gave Clear that massive payout... I don't see Sprint going LTE anytime soon, until Clear starts building out LTE.

Too big to fail without a bailout! I don't think it will happen just like I'm sure the at&t tmo merger won't go through. Not enough benefit to the consumer.

That's the problem though, they gave all that money to Clear and Clear has dropped the ball. They are having to find another solution because Clear is done.
