Smartphones Sell More Than Feature Phones; Android Still Leading

A year ago Smartphones made up over 38% of all mobile phones being sold, and Android had an almost even marketshare with iOS. Since then, after over 10 Android phones have been released and the iPhone 4 went public, we have new numbers. Nielsen's latest report for this month's market share are in, and currently for every one hundred phones that are being sold, 55% of them run on one of the many Smartphone OS'. That's a pretty major yearly change. This growth is mostly thanks to Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T's strong push with iOS and Android OS. These reports have always given us a better understanding of how the market is looking, and since Android growth has slowed down a bit, we are eagerly anticipating what Google will do next to boost growth.

Not surprised. My dad had to get a new phone from costco, and he actually wanted a feature phone, he didn't really want or need a smartphone, and yet he ended up getting the Samsung Captivate through AT&T at Costco because they didn't really have any feature phones. A smartphone is wasted on someone like him because he doesn't use any of those features that we use. He has a garmin already, the smallest data plan, and before the ZOMG ROOT CUSTOM ROM dweebs come out, I never tell anyone that unless they actually ask. Smartphones really aren't for everyone, let alone a powerful one like the galaxy s.

He has this really powerful device in his hand he's really only going to use it as a phone. Its really wasted, and all because he couldn't get a normal feature phone at Costco.

My parents are the same way. While they love my Galaxy S, it's just not something they would use. They need a phone only and they've both had the same flip phone they purchased almost 6 years ago.
As for feature phones, they do still sell them, but you have to either purchase them online, or visit your local Verizon, AT&T ,Sprint etc store.
