Last week was a big week in news. We saw the launch of the Galaxy S4, and several rumors regarding the Motorola X Phone. This weekend some new and exciting rumors hit the web... this time regarding the next Nexus device. Two sets of rumors about a new Nexus 5 device made their rounds. The first one is probably pure poppy-cock. It says that the Nexus 5 will be produced by LG and will come with some very outlandish specs, including a 5.2-inch display, a Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 16MP camera. Nearly every publication is calling this one bogus, and so are we.

The second set of rumors regarding the Nexus 5 seem quite more plausible. Here's the skinny,
  • Snapdragon 600 chipset
  • 5-inch 1080p display
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 3140 mAh battery

Needles to say these specs have us salivating. There's more to go with this. Supposedly, Google plans to get very serious about the camera tech in the Nexus 5. They might go the "UltraPixel" route just like HTC did. This was even indirectly confirmed by Google's own Vic Gundrotta in a previous report where he indicated that Google is “committed to making Nexus phones insanely great cameras.” Of course this could simply be conjecture at this point, but it's not too far-fetched. Here's a quote with some more details,

Google and Nikon have worked together in the past, including on the Nikon Coolpix S800c, which features an Android-based firmware. Google also acquired Nik software last year, makers of Snapseed, and a company Nikon had previously made a sizable investment in.

The sensor of the new camera will reportedly be a three-sensor affair, which sounds like it could resemble the tech used in HTC’s Ultrapixel or Sigma’s Foveon X3 sensors, by combining three sensor layers, each with a smaller megapixel count, to create a single higher resolution image with better color rendering and light capture. This is still very much a rumor, but it’s an interesting one and definitely seems to be in line with Google’s apparent goals for the Nexus line.
Finally, there is an indirect Nexus Tablet rumor that came along for the ride with these rumors. Supposedly, the next Nexus tablet will be the Nexus 10.2 and will feature a Snapdragon 800 processor. It looks like the rumor-mill is getting revved up for 2013!
