Figured, I'd save us all the time from goin back and forth with instructions and just typed it all out.
Hopefully it works for him the first time. Some have taken several tries.

Hello, I just got a Motorola Cliq 2 (with motoblur), and tried installing z4root 1.3.0. It installed, and ran. I received 2 options:

    Temporary Root
    Permanent Root

No matter which one I try, it doesn't seem to work. It goes through the "running exploit" and "acquiring shell", and after about a minute it exits and returns to the applications menu. Is my phone too new? My About screen says:

    System version: Version.1.1.30.MB611.T-Mobile.en.US
    Model number: MB611
    Android version: 2.2.2
    Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-g40740d1
    Build number: BGN_1.1.30

Any help would be great. Thanks!

I don't know of a custom rom for the cliq2. I do know that sometimes it takes a couple of tries to root a Motorola phone.

Motorola may have blocked the exploit used in z4root. Do you have USB Debugging enabled?

Ok, I could keep trying over and over. Odd it would take a few times though, isn't it? I do have USB Debugging enabled; it wouldn't run unless I did that. It runs, and doesn't throw any errors. What should it do upon success? Remain in the z4root application? My main goal is to be able to change some of the sounds-- like the Lock and Unlock. If there exists a simpler way to accomplish this, I'd be happy (for now). Thanks for the replies!

I think there's an app in the Market for that. I can't remember what it's called.

Try Super One Click to root the phone. You'll need a PC for that.

Use root checker to see if you are rooted. If not look up Gingerbreak root method
