That depends on your phone and if you have any kind of personal computer.

    (1) what Mac OS are you currently on? and (2) can you install the android sdk? ... i'm a mac person too and i used the doroot unix shell script (which consequently is NOT compatible with the evo, iirc) but at the expense of oversimplification... if you can install the android sdk, you can root.

have you considering dual-booting with ubuntu? it's easy to setup on older macs ... those of us who now have 10.6.x ... not so much. you have to have a bucket for the gallons of sweat during the process...because bricking (actual bricking too, completely corrupting your EFI boot partition) your Apple == not cool.

also, have you tried this method? didn't see any bash commands that couldn't also be modified for UNIX either... for the most part, a UNIX shell is a UNIX shell.

If you can boot a Linux live CD then you can use the Terminal easily enough.

a live cd can be a little buggy on mac, especially depending on the model ... for most models there are some patches required to make everything work well

... although i wouldn't necessarily say that any of the steps in the manual root process are "advanced" per se...(just tedious) and most of the advanced stuff is already done for you, but still ... for a superuser process process i'd make sure to have all the kinks worked out before i got to flashing anything in superuser-space... but i'm not as quick and dirty as some lol

EDIT: and also, setting up the android sdk using a live cd could be a little weird... i know it's possible, but i'm not sure how reliable it would be. you would need to setup the android sdk on the root folder of the mac partition, boot into the cd and mount the mac file system and run it while mounted. and i'm not sure how the permissions to run adb would work out for that... mac doesn't like to play nice with other OSs...

this would take some testing to figure out how exactly to get it to work. my guess would be that some recursive chmod-ing of the android sdk folders could fix some of the permissions problems if they crept up... hmm... do i smell chicken or is that an experiment coming on!?!
