I'm trying to get my head around getting a Google phone but not sure what the footprint will be. I have Google voice already but how do I get calls when I'm not within
the footprint of a local wi-fi? Do I need a cell phone carrier like Verizon or T-Mobile? And if I get a Google phone is there a specific carrier I need to get?

Any help would be appreciated. As I am ready to ditch my other cell phone with V.

Welcome to the forum! As with any other phone, you need a data plan in order to make and receive phone calls. You can use Wi-Fi for everything else, but you'll still need to have a data plan, so check with your local carriers to see what type of plan will suit your needs. It's hard to say which carrier to choose as each have their strengths and weaknesses, so you'll have to find out who has the best coverage in your area. AT&T & Verizon have the best overall coverage in the US, so you should probably start there.
Good luck!
