View Full Version : Need Serious Programming Device

Hello All,

Will try and keep this short: Am an old time developer, since 1979. I was self-taught, as a kid, never one class. The weakness there is that I never learned most of the terms.
So when learning new languages, it was harder since I didn’t have a reference point. i.e. may no longer be used, but I created “linked lists”, just never knew they were called that.

Anyway, I never got past using C and WinSDK. And I learned just enough Perl on the fly as I needed it to create some backend parts to some of my apps.

I am desperate to start a new project, preferring to do it on android first. As hard as I looked for LOCAL developers with serious programming experience, and preferably some Voice SDK experience I failed. I tried Craigslist and Meet Up. Nothing.

So I need to do this MYSELF. Or at least start it and come up with the alpha-prototype on my own.

After all that explaining, what’s the BEST (and least expensive) means I can purchase to teach myself programming an Android device?
I always loved forums, we’re talking back when NEWSGROUPS were the way to go. Because out there was always someone who knew…and was willing to share their point of view.

So any help, any direction would be so appreciated.

Many thanks ahead all,

Sergio

Welcome to the forum! You might Google Android Programming, there's a ton of information available about creating apps. (Keep in mind, it's nothing like the programming you grew up with) There are simple programs you can buy to make a very simple app or game, but those won't include anything voice related or anything too advanced. Also, check out the XDA forum. That's where all the developers hang out.
Word to the wise though, watch your step over there as a newcomer, they can be a bit harsh and a bit critical if you go in guns blazing.
Good luck!

Already tripped over the trigger wire in a Perl newsgroup years ago. So I've learned to be careful. But thanks for the advice and warning.

and of course there's an error on that site. Unable to Register. Ugh!

Don't be surprised. XDA wouldn't allow me to register, stating that it was because at the time, I was using a Sprint IP. Really? I was really supposed to believe that all Sprint customers are barred from registering on XDA? My question, why? What is wrong with Sprint customers? But that is a topic for another day.

That's a rather bizarre attitude for XDA to take.
