Astro File Manager - Android does not come with a very good file manager. Astro File Manager is a free app that will allow you better access to your phone's internal and external memory (SDK card). You will be able to move, copy/paste your files.

Dolphin HD - One of the best free browsers out there. Is able to play flash video, and uses a multiple-tab feature. Much better than the stock browser.

Skyfire - Just like Dolphin HD, plays flash video quite well. Although sometimes, can be a bit sluggish...

Google Goggles - One of the more fun free apps from Google. Take a picture of a bar code, or take a picture of a book... Google Goggles will try to find it.

FaceBook / Twitter - If you love social networking... you have to download the official FaceBook and Twitter apps. Both are very quick and accessible.

Google Voice - For any Google Voice user, you need the Google Voice app. Send/receive free SMS messages, and be able to listen to your voice mails.

Advanced Task Killer - Simply the best app killer on the market that is free. It takes about 30 seconds to setup, and have it kill any app that you wish on your phone. This will dramatically speed up your phone. There is some controversy over app killer; read this link for more information - http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-applications/65483-task-killers-answer-google-developers.html

Pandora - This is a great music app that works in a great way. It has a feature that recommends other songs based on songs that you usually listen to. It also includes a very good book-marking feature.

Paid Apps - But Good Apps

Napster - Streams great, plays great, runs great!

Sirius XM - Just like Napster... streams great, plays great, and runs great. Get access to ALL Sirius XM channels on this app, even the controversial Howard Stern channels.

If there are other apps that you want to recommend... simply reply below and i'll include them along with your name ;)

I can't name one reason why ATK is even in that list.

'ATK', it's a preference. Some people will like them quite a lot. I, myself, notice a considerable difference when I run it on my Droid2. I've read "pro vs. con" articles... it's still a choice of the user.

Bubble Buster is a very addicting game I would recommend :android-party:

I am running a rooted D2 which makes an ATK obsolete in my opinion.

Check out watchdog and data usage. Watchdog is a task killer that only alerts misbehaving apps. Data usage, lets you see how much data all the apps are useing on your phone.
