Welcome to the forum. What phone you trying to root. I also want to let you know that current phone is not for your phone number. It's for the phone you have, such as Samsung Vibrant, or HTC Evo. Unless, you want people crank calling you, I would change it.

What is the purpose of rooting the phone?

It grants administrator access to the phone so you can do things otherwise impossible due to security. Depending on the phone you can overclock it, underclock it, apply a custom ROM, freeze bloat, and back up your data and applications easier.

Should be able to, but be warned your carrier can tell you're tethering and you might get in trouble for it.

I just rooted it.... now the mobil hotspot works and I have this super user access

That's what you get when you root. Without SuperUser access you can't use the tethering app. Congratulations on root.

I do not know the jest of it. I would however strongly suggest not to root any Sprint,Boost&Virgin mobile phones. They are finicky and easy to mess up.

So I shouldn't root my phone then. But why? I would really love to try out this super user thingy.

I too am a newbie. I have just acquired a Boostmobile Galaxy Prevail (1st gen in black SPH-M820), have read a lot about rooting but it seems complicated where others call it easy. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro but I can borrow my gf's Windows laptop if needed. Please assist or advise me the easiest way to root this for myself. There are local shops that charge $35-$45 to do the root, but I'd like to have the experience of doing it myself and saving the money for other things. Thanks! ~Brett

I brought root/SU to my Prevail via Odin and a Windows PC. Go to Settings/Development on your phone, and enable debugging; also in Settings/Apps, enable installation of apps by third-party developers*. Connect your phone to the PC via USB; enable Odin on the PC. Just make sure that the two (sometimes three) .tar files provided by Odin are placed into the slots indicated within Odin's GUI; hit enter, and Odin will work its voodoo; root created! *NOTE: Before doing that, make sure CLOCKWORKMOD, Busybox, and Superuser are installed on your phone by way of the Google Play Store; then, 'Google' Odin for Windows PCs, and download that to your PC, OS XP to 8.1 (at the time, I was running XP - so I don't know how Odin'll behave in newer OSs). This should get you up and running, if you caught the asterisk in this post :D. I'm now running hroark's CM7 MOD with with the external SD kernel; my internal memory is attached to a partition in my 32 gB SD Card; my internal app memory usage currently is 311 mB; to keep things running smoothly, without overclocking the CPU (not recommended - Samsung batteries for the Prevail get really hot when the CPU remains at 800 mHz; max clock for this little guy is 964 mHz, and from my experience - go to a dual-core processor, like Snapdragon - this guy will become a toasted brick otherwise)... I use the Userspace governor, and I installed D. Mehrmann's SD Booster, and set the cache at 2048 - even though my SD card is rated class 10, I'm making this SD work hard. The phone is loaded with apps - counting the internal apps, I'm up to 91 or so, plus mp3s galore. The phone runs smoothly - the only thing this phone can't do is tether. To do that, I just go back to one of my other ROMS in Nandroid backup - like CT-MOD 3.80, or ICS-Jellybean-based CM9 3.5.5 Kang (also hroark's) - nice, but no camera/video drivers. Hope this long-winded post helps others find root for their Boost Mobile, lowly 3G Samsung Galaxy Prevail.
