They haven't announced a release date yet. The general consensus is that they simply won't ever release an update, since they are dropping the phone prices like crazy getting ready for the Glory. You can mod up to 2.2 or 2.3, though. I'm running 2.3.4 using PlayfulGod's CM7 06242011. Works great. I'm hearing good things about KMod's CM7 also. You can find those here: Main Page - Playfuldroidz Wiki (http://playfuldroidz.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page)

I hate to link from one forum to another, but there is an awesome guide to doing just about anything you wish to do with an Ascend here: ultimate ascend customization guide. - Android Forums

J (http://androidforums.com/ascend-all-things-root/320265-ultimate-ascend-customization-guide.html)ust realize if you want to use PlayfulGod's latest mod, use his 06242001 build, found here: http://prepaidandroid.org/index.php?title=CM7-Ascend with the 20110306 gapps version found in the guide.

Remember, you have to root your phone first, install CWM, then you can start modding. I HIGHLY recommend getting Superuser, then Titanium Backup after rooting your phone. Use the Superuser to help manage root permissions for apps, and Titanium Backup to back up all your apps and the user data associated with them. TB is superhelpful for re-installing your apps, and can do it all at once with the batch commands. After you install a CyanogenMod, it will root on it's own, and I believe they all come with Superuser.

Again, I can't stress this enough. Backup, backup, backup. You will never come to regret it.

I was nervous as heck the first time I modded up. I thought "Man, I'm going to ruin my phone." But it's really not that bad, and if you try out a few different mods, you'll be feeling just fine about it. Once you get competent about modding, you can even keep multiple mods on your phone, and switch them out with CWM.

Shouldn't be a problem. Rooting an Android is only gaining supervisor permissions for apps. I don't see it making a difference at all. You really only need permissions for TB and CWM.

NP. I'm working on my phone ATM, so I'm not going anywhere if you run into a hiccup. Remember, be patient the first time you boot up your phone. It can take several minutes before anything happens.

One final thought... you don't really need to format your sdcard. Especially don't if you didn't copy your TB backup file to off-phone somewhere. And backup your contacts to your Google Account.

You put the zip files, still zipped, onto your sdcard. CM7 will be 2.4, and that's it. You downloaded a zip file, correct? All CWM does by itself is let you mess around with the phone's system before it boots.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about cm7, not cwm.

Ok, you unzip the cwm file on your computer. Doesn't matter where.

Turn on USB debugging on your phone.

Power down your phone.

Hold volume down and home (the right-most button), then press power while still holding them down.

If you did it right, you'll only see the Huawei screen, and nothing else will happen.

Plug your phone to your computer via USB.

Run the files that match your system in this order: adb, fastboot, install recovery. (For instance, if you're on a windows vista, run adb-windows.)

Unhook the phone, do a battery pull for several seconds, put it back in.

Hold down on volume up and the call button (the left-most button) then press power while holding them in.

You should see the CWM screen pop up before the phone boots.

This should install CWM for you.

lol ok, that's cm7. You DON'T unzip it. Whatever you just put on your phone, delete it. Put the CM7 and gapps zip files onto your sdcard UNZIPPED. CWM will unzip and install them itself.

Just for the record, CWM is ClockWorkMod. It allows you to delete, format, mount, install, ect.

CM7 is CyanogenMod 7. That's the Android 2.3.4 user created ROM that's going to replace your ANDROID 2.2 stock ROM.

I'm reading about it all right now, and some people are having problems by not formatting their sdcard. If you need to, make sure you do it within ClockWorkMod.

Another thought: if you're using Cricket, you'll be fine, but if you're using Metro, you'll have MMS issues. You'll have to grab the MetrOFF MMS Fix (http://techygeek.org/media/MetrOFF-v1.3-MMS-GB-Edify-CM_ASOP-No_Roaming_indicator_Off_signed.zip) zip file, put it on your sdcard like you did the other zip files, boot back into CWM, and install it with the "install .zip from sdcard" option.

Ascend - Kentae's CM7 06242011 (http://db.tt/ig4OBJh) - This one has a very customized feel to it, almost too much. Runs fairly smooth. I only had it installed for a couple hours. I wasn't impressed with it.
Ascend - Kentae's Modded Gapps 06242011 (http://db.tt/dB1WmMK)

Ascend - PlayfulGod's CM7.1 06242001 (http://techygeek.org/media/CM7.1-Ascend-06242011_signed.zip) - This one has a more natural, clean feel to it. Runs smooth, feels stable, my preferred mod.
Ascend - Gapps 20110317 (http://android.d3xt3r01.tk/cyanogen/gapps/gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip) - I've had much better luck with the older version of Gapps for PG's build.

Ascend - BobZ's CM7 062511 (http://www.mediafire.com/?l5ei2o45u58x9ix) BobZ's mod works really well. I'm keeping it on my phone the rest of the week to really see how it feels, but so far, so good. Nice, clean, stable. Even the lag I create with my homescreen full of widgets feels minimized and smoothed out.

Another bit of info: once you're installed, and you want to connect to your computer, just plug your phone into the computer with your USB cable, and you'll see a USB notification pop up in the notification bar on your phone. Pull your bar down, tap the "USB connected" message, and click on the "Turn on USB storage" button. Click "OK" and you'll be golden. Your computer might come up with the pop up asking if you want to scan and fix, or just continue without fixing. Make sure you continue without fixing.

That's the build I use. I like it. It shouldn't be taking a full 5 minutes. I might take a little while, but that's extreme. Wait another minute, and if still doing it, and you can't get a response from the trackball, you'll have to pull the battery. Make sure to leave it out more than a couple seconds. Start from scratch, so you know everything's getting straightened out. You're doing it all in the order Tokenpoke said to?

power off phone and reboot into cwm (VOLUME ROCKER UP+CALL BUTTON+POWER)

use your track ball to select (in order) the following commands

wipe data/ factory reset
wipe cache

advanced

wipe dalvik cache

press the back button (the arrow) on your phone.
under mounts and storage, format following...
boot
data
system
cache

press the back button (the arrow) on your phone.

install .zip from sd
chose zip from sd.
choose cm7.zip
choose gapps-cm7.zip

phone will do a bunch of crazy stuff for a few minutes after each .zip is selected

press back on your phone

select:
mounts and storage,
format sd

press back on your phone

select:
advanced,
fix permissions

restart system now.

Haven't even come across or heard of this problem before. I'd say re-install CWM, but you're probably better off installing a newer version. Try installing 3.0.2.4 (http://www.mediafire.com/file/knueqiqflhc2tp0/CWM Recovery 3.0.2.4.zip) instead.

You probably have a lazy Ascend, as do I, and it can't handle the higher OverClock kernal. Look for the lower OC 672 flash here. http://prepaidandroid.org/index.php?title=Huawei_Ascend

Do you need a stock update or would you prefer/be more comfortable with a ROM? If you're more comfortable with a ROM then there is at least one top-flight ROM available for your phone. Let me know so I know how to proceed. :)
