I've tried two different apps. Barnacle and this one:
android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/)

Not able to connect with either one. Running 7 - 64 bit but I've tried my 32 bit xp and still no luck.

Try a different version of wifi tether. It happened on mine and I tried a diff version and it worked right away.

Yes it's rooted. I'll try a different version.

Make sure you are using the most current version. Several ROMS now included a Hacked version of the Sprint HotSpot app so you don't even really need this particular app.

I always used the pre9 version of wifi tether and never had a problem with it. But yeah, just try al the later ones, one is bound to work for you.

What ROM are you running?

Still on stock rom. Maybe I need to install a rom. What's the best for the Epic?

I don't see why it wouldn't work on a stock ROM. A friend of mine has an Epic and he's been running SuperNova. It's a Froyo ROM and he's had good luck with it. And I know he's got Wifi Tether installed.

Check this link on XDA for a list of Epic ROMS.

I'm on stock rom rooted and wifi tether works fine for me. I think I mentioned it already but it took me 3 different versions to get it to work.
