If you're the type of person who's into Android source code -- and let's face it, you probably are -- then you should know that Motorola's had the source for the Backflip (http://androidcentral.com/tags/backflip) available for a week now. Now you can play amateur Android chef and cook up your own locked-down, drive-a-blogger-nuts Motorola Backflip ROM (http://www.androidcentral.com/att-locks-down-its-first-android-phone-backflip-so-what), just like AT&T. I saw this earlier. I think the only thing they need now is the boot.rom or something to root the phone.

Just a matter of time now.

We already have it.

We already have what?

Dumps of the ROM..

So does this mean the chefs can cook up a 2.1 update for Backflip?

I hope all goes well with improving on the functionality of this phone that I still think is a great phone.

The only code that has been revealed by Motorola so far I believe has been for 1.5 (even the updated code that has been released just appears to be an update for 1.5). The problem they have now I believe is that we don't have the keys needed to sign a self made update so that the phone will accept it as an update.

If we have the OTA keys, I believe we can upgrade to 2.0.

i downloaded the source code like a week ago

my problem is, i want. . . i really want. . to code and compile the codes in order achieve want im aiming for, but i dont know where to start or read to be able to do so that is more for noobs

I was wondering is it possible to reinstall android(not the same android that is preinstalled but like another android os) on the motorola backflip and still be able to use the at&t carrier so i can achieve root?

i know what im saying isn't in best detail, because i do know that rooting is device specific but im trying to figure out any avenue in order allow the restrictions to go away that at&t has forcefully put upon, because i want my first android experience to be full!

Until it is possible to root the phone, it is not possible to install different versions of Android than what is already on the phone.
