Win 8 Stopped Recognizing Device as a Disk Drive

I'm pretty sure I have connected my HTC Desire HD to my Win 8 desktop before, using the same cable I'm using now, the one with an htc tag on it. It used to say there was a problem with my disk drive, did I want to fix it, to which I always answered no, thinking it would delete my phone files or something. Today, when I have tried plugging the phone into every USB port on my computer, in all cases, it starts charging, and it opens the F drive. When I double click that, it tells me to insert a disk. When I look at properties, it shows "HTC Android Phone USB Device". However, it also shows two other devices. Is that the problem? Is it Win 8 help I need, not Android phone help? I read something about assigning a different drive letter to a device, but I didn't understand how to do it and can't find that now.

I am not seeing the USB connection icon on the top row on my device home screen, just the charging (charged) light. I have the same USB Connection Type setting of Disk Drive that I've always used.

I'd like to access my files again.
    Thanks.

Well, it was the cord. I read that in a different thread, and thought it could not be the case, but a guy at the Windows store in Honolulu plugged it in and it worked fine. I bought a new cord, and it works fine on my laptop.
