HDMI - exactly what is this for?

I thought the HDMI connection would be used to play videos (homemade or youtube on my hd tv. (or Sprint tv, tv.com, etc, movies, etc) but the only thing that comes out on my little set is photographs.

So far, pretty much whatever I play comes out on my HD TV. YouTube, TV.com, photos, videos, ...everything. I know all the HD stuff comes out, but some of the stuff that plays I"m not totally sure it is HD, expecially all the shows on TV.com.

What is the hdmi ethernet, how did you get the hdmi to work because both my magnovox and my evo are set to automatic. The only thing I can get to work is the sound from the evo to the tv out to my stereo via spdf coax cable. I did get the tv.com to show up, but nothing else yet. How do you put movies on the evo and get them to play? Are they supposed to be a certain format and where do you save them so they're accessable?
