double sms notifications

After the gingerbread update, I have been seeing double notifications for texts. I have the stock messaging app icon on my home screen which shows the number of texts I have next to it, and I also get notifications in the bar up top. When I click either on the notification bar or the icon itself the notification goes away but the little number beside the icon does not. I have to go back into the message app and view the same text all over again (after already reading it) and click back a few times for the little number to go away. Any ideas how to fix this? It's kind of annoying thinking I have new texts when I really don't.
