Will enabling GPS drain alot of battery??
Android.net is the premier Android Forum on the internet.
The main radio's on your phone 4g, wifi, gps, and bluetooth do drain your battery more. With droid though you can put these widgets on one screen and turn them on just when you need them very easily.
I only turn on GPS when I need it. It does drain the battery some and I think you would have a problem getting the battery to last all day if you left it on. However it's not nearly as bad as if you were to leave Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on all the time. When radios search for signal they use more power than when they are locked on to one.
The GPS radio doesn't actually transmit anything, it only receives satellite signals, so it doesn't use as much power as the others.
The only thing I can suggest is to try leaving it on for a day, and see if you make it through (make sure you have your charger handy.) On the stock Sprint EVO, the screen to the left of Home (swipe right) has 4 radio widgets on it and it's easy to turn them on and off.
I gave my iPhone to my 5 year old and got an EVO.
my gps switch stays ON 100% of the time. its really only active when an app requests location.
friday-saturday i got 30 hours of battery life on a single charge. granted i am using setCPU to downclock with screen off, but just sayin
