Verizon does have a way to tell where the data goes, actually. For example, there is a hack using Motorola Customer Support programs to disable the data append so that it doesn't differentiate the data that's passing through to something else, and the data whose final destination is the phone itself. I don't know how to do it on non-Motorola phones, and I would be very careful, as messing with the radio firmware settings can render your phone completely unable to access any networks...

However I haven't seen any instances where someone was charged after the fact for tethering using barnacle or wireless tether for root users, or for using too much data.

Is there anyway to stop them from know, like an IP scrambler? And the WiFi barnacle app, I believe, uses whatever is connected. Whether 4G or 3G.

Talk to P3Droid or Miami about that one. I have it from one of them that someone they know had it happen to them -- woke up one day and BAM, no service and a giant FU bill from them. When customer service was called about it the tech said that Verizon didn't want their business anymore, thankyouverymuch and not to steal.

I wouldn't personally wifi tether unless I had to. It's not worth the possible aggravation. Remember, the carriers didn't want the tiered data plans, that came from the government. All carriers are now getting heavily taxed on data. You know the saying, " $h!+ rolls down hill"? Who you think is at the bottom?

I'm not tethering to download huge files, just want it for netflix on my tv and when I'm on Vaca. 9 days in a van with my father-in-law? Hell yeah I want the internet to get away from him!! LOL!
Btw, what government tax? If they are taxing is Bullsh!t! They can't tax something that isn't a company, has no real/true location, or controllable. If Verizon is getting pushed around then fight back! I bet if they defend the consumer, people would support them more. I know I would!

Tethering to stream movies is a Very Bad Idea. Especially in HD format, the amount of data you'll use is frightening. I'd consider paying the tethering fee for the month, especially if you have 4G coverage.

I guess no matter what we say, or what the carriers do, some folks just won't get it until it hits them in the pocket. Oh well....
