    Cool Hello, Android World!

I am three days into ownership of a Droid X (Verizon) and haven't been this excited about a piece of tech in a long time. I am a retired systems administrator/programmer who was looking for something to do and can't believe that I missed all of the excitement around mobile devices. I am fired up and seriously considering doing some apps development for the Android system.

I have been reading up on the root posts here and probably will root my phone after I screw up my courage a bit more. I can't leave any device I get alone, have to upgrade it and tweak it. I like the idea of taking control of the device and making it mine.

So here I am and looking forward to new adventures with my Droid X!

Wow, you guys are fast! I did wonder how rooting affects or is affected by automatic updates of the Android system by the carrier.

Rooting itself won't block updates. Its everything you do after rooting like removing system apps, installing custom ROMs, using custom themes. But there is a fix or option to revert back to stock whenever there is an OTA update, so no worries.

OK. I kinda thought that. So SOP would be to run the fix after the update and then rerun root? Or would root still be there after the fix?

You would update then have to reroot. Any official OTA will remove root.

Well, I have taken the plunge and am now rooted - with a backup just in case.

Now, does anyone have suggestions for the next steps - most valuable actions to take?

This forum has been invaluable to me. Thanks for all the good advice/handholding.

Congrats on rooting, now what to do next, is up to you.
You can now rename, remove or freeze bloatware using Titanium Backup.
    Flash a custom ROM/theme.
    Overclock and undervolt.

So many things you can do!
