Question New to the forum with a question

Hello, I am new to the forum and have a question,
My name is Seth and I live in Dallas, TX. I am a beginning developer and have basic knowledge of html, css, some java script and cold fusion. I am attempting to create an app for android where its only function it to call to the url of an app i have hosted on my server. The reason is so that i can leave the index in a .cfm format, but i want the user to be able to have a custom icon on their android phone, and later on iphone without having to submit them to the respective app store. Does anyone know an easy way to do this?

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration,

    Seth Stephens

    Welcome to the forums

Sounds like you really just want a bookmark to a webpage with a custom icon?

I guess it depends a lot on the phone/OS/skin. Some use a standard icon, some use your favicon your website defines, other use a mini screenshot for the icon. It really depends. There is almost no consistency here.

For whatever it's worth, you can sign up as an Android dev for $25 (lifetime) as opposed to Apple ($99/yr)

You could also create an App in Android and have users side load it. Or for iOS use a non Apple jailbreak store like cydia (or whatever it's called).

Though that can be more of a chore for the user.

    hope that helps

Thank you for the welcome H.P. and for the information alostpacket,
    when you said,

"You could also create an App in Android and have users side load it."

I think this is the direction I am trying to go, i just don't know where to go from where I am...Using Webview to call the screen allows me to run the .cfm file but I don't have any idea how to make a side load app available to a user on my site where it will actually use an image i have designated for an icon on their home screen to shortcut to the page...any ideas? Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I wasn't sure if I should post in the developers forum, since I don't actually have an android developers license.
    thanks alot.

We have a beginning dev section you can always post in

Anyways, sideloading is just where a user downloads the .apk from your website and installs it through a file manager like Astro. Most Android phones have a setting that turns off side-loading by default. Users will usually be prompted that they need to enable this if they try to instal without enabling it first.

But yeah, you're on the right track with a webview, etc
