Does anyone know of an app that will turn the camera LED light on for a flashlight? I noticed there are apps for other phones and I have tried most of them I found. None worked, so I was just wondering if there was one out that worked for the Ally that I missed. I know I can go to camcorder mode, but that's a lot of work....

Sorry MCDANIEM, I don't have an answer to your question, and I see that no one else has answered your question, so I thought I might could pose a question for any LG staffer or Andoid programmer reading this thread that might could help you out.

[DISCLAIMER - I am no Java programmer, so I may be sh*t out in left field on this - asking for forgiveness in advance ]

I've only browsed some of the 2.1 API documentation, but it seems that the apps that work to make the camera LED light up for the Motorola and HTC phones either use the generic Android camera autofocus API FLASH_MODE_ON and set it to true, or use the Android 2.x camera API TORCH_MODE and set it to true.

So here is my question to LG:

Why do these programs work on Motorola and HTC equipment, but not on the LG Ally? Is the LG hardware not mapped to the same low level interface used in the stock API calls?

I found an app that uses the screen as an all white app.

Not quite as effective, but works.

    It's called "Light".

    Good luck!

    Thanks allynati.

I had found that app previously so I currently use it. Its just not as effective as the led camera light.

The phone has been out over a month now and yet is there still no LED Flashlight App for this phone? I've even gone as far as rooting my phone to find an app that does it and I'm getting annoyed...LG should have made the app themselves in this case...I miss my LED Flashlight on my Blackberry...thats all I miss but I really do miss it!

The apps that light up the screen are good enough to guide me through my house at 4am when it's pitch black. I'd probably enjoy having an LED flashlight app too but heck... what's the point in complaining.

The camera LED is very bright. I almost blinded myself playing with the different settings on the camera. (See Camera Settings)

I would love to find an app that uses it but all the ones I try don't work. I don't think the screen lights are bright enough.

ok I figured out a way to enable the led flash as a flashlight, in order to do it u have to download the bar control app then add the flash led on/off to ur notification bar and click on it through there, although not the best option it does work

I did what jspence3013 said, and it worked. Then I started to think there must be an app that would let me shortcut the same feature to the home screen, and I found one!

The app Any Cut will do it, as well as it's paid version, BetterCut. If you do Any Cut just add a shortuct to your home screen, under shortcuts select Any Cut. Then select activity, under there you can select flash led on/off. You can then rename it to Flashlight or whatever, and poof you have an icon that will do flashlight. If you buy Bettercut (it's like 2-3bucks) you can change the icon and the text for the icon will line up properly, instructions are about the same. I got the Aero Icon Pack that you can download from the market for Bettercut, in there is a little flashlight icon, looks good.

Note that after you hit the icon you still have to toggle the light, just a simple tap, and it will only stay on for 20 to 30 seconds or so(honestly didn't time it,) then you will have to toggle off then on again. As well your status light will alternate colors, which in my opinion doesn't matter, kinda neat actually. One last thing is it will keep an item in your cache memory that takes up a few MBs, really shouldn't hinder anything, but if you have some sort of task killer (I use SystemPanel,) you can end it after using it.

Did this for my girlfriends new ally, it's not perfect, but works, and looks decent. Better than my incredible where the only app out there is paid, and you have to reboot your phone after you use it if you want to use the camera flash again.

Thanks to jspence3013 for figuring out the main part.

    Enjoy : )

I think I'll wait until someone comes up with one for us specifically. Any programmers out there want to develop this for us?
