I was rooted before I updated to 2.2.1 and had been running barnacle to have a nice adhoc network at home. Now I can't find a one click root that works. Anybody know of one? Or possibly an app like barnacle that works root free?

Android.net is the premier Android Forum on the internet.
There are no 1 click roots available for 2.2.1.
Haven't tried this yet for 2.2, but in case you want to try .. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16606359/z4root.1.1.0.apk.zip
Just unzip and install apk via SD card

This is about as easy as it is going to get until z4root updates its exploit. The package used in that walk through does have a user interface that does all of the steps for you as well. You just have to connect your phone to a computer and enable usb debugging
It's been posted before (somewhere). Currently the simplest rooting program for the Ally is "Super 1 Click". It is not an app you download to your phone.. you download to your computer.. plug your phone into your computer then follow the simple instructions.
Make sure you are using the new version of the program that uses psneuter (as opposed to rageagainstthecage).
If you are still having issues, try to get a root shell manually. see this thread: http://www.lgallyforums.com/topic/2309-221-easy-root/ and follow step one up to the point where you remount the file system. If you can't get a root shell, double check the super 1 click version again and maybe try a different one.
