Alright. I moved into my new basement apartment only to find that I have horrible service range where I live. I have to go outside to make and receive phone calls Because that's where i get 1 whole bar of service. I get 1x in my my house and I have to be by a window to get 3G. To use PDAnet I have my phone hanging out the window so that i can use the internet. haha What i want to know is will the Verizon Wireless Network extender work for me? I know that I have to have internet for it to work (which is stupid) but has anyone had experience with this thing. They are really expensive for what they are but I'm considering buying one so that I have Talk service in my house.

Hi scotty. The answer to your question is yes.

And yes, they require a broadband or DSL internet connection, but I'm not sure why you feel that's stupid. The reason why is because the extender uses it for real time location, GPS, and clock time. Also, in the event that you need to dial 911 emergency,......but have no cell signal.

Once you are registered with the extender, your phone will "talk" with it, not the cell tower. Your Ally can "talk" to the extender for about 35--40 feet. But you have to stay within that range. If you're talking on the phone inside your house, then continue your call while walking or driving away, your Ally will smoothly transfer you from the extender, to the Verizon cellular network. If three people in the house want to talk at the same time, no problem. The extender has 3 seperate channels available. It can "talk" with 3 phones at the same time. How can you tell if you're using the extender, or the network? There's a number you can dial to verify the connection, but the easy way is this. When making or receiving a new call, you'll hear a short, double tone to signal an extender connection. You won't get that signal from the network.

And you're right buddy, 250 bucks is something to consider. But hey, it has some cool LED lights on it!

One last thing, there is no additional monthly charge for using an extender, and yes, you will see your 1X signal bar go up a notch or two.

Thank you for the reply Minty! but to clarify why it is stupid in my opinion to have internet with the extender is because there should be a way to amplify the signal from the regular towers to bring it into your home. Kinda like having an access point. But I guess it doesn't work that way. I went to the Verizon store yesterday to look at one and they have it for $199 with $100 mail-in rebate. So the price is better. Just have to have the initial $200. Thanks again!

Gotcha buddy, and I understand the idea you have about an access point, you clever rascal, ...but here's the thing. The cell towers can only use so much power to send their signal. By the way, they send a signal 24/7 to let cell phones know they are there and ready to communicate. Anyway,...your Ally can only use so much power too, I think it's 500 milliwatts to send it's signal. These power levels are of course regulated for many reasons.



Here's an interesting note. Your Ally uses only enough power to "talk" to the extender as it needs to. Since you are pretty close to the extender, you may well see battery life increase slightly. Not a whole lot, but with a smartphone it helps.



Isn't it nice to know, that your Ally runs on the Verizon network which is at full power 24/7 365 days a year barring physical damage. Even after the storm, when your town has the power out temporarily Verizon towers and cell stations are unphased being driven by industrial strength Caterpillar diesel generators.

I use it. You must have a view of the clear sky and I use the extended antenna and have it taped to a window sill. It works...sometimes but without it I'd have no signal at all.

I have the network extender and it works great. One thing to remember though is that the extender will not improve your 3G. It only works for voice.

I just got an extender also. In my apartment, I have no bars,or maybe one. When I am right up on the extender it gives me all 5 bars, but still sometimes I drop my call. If I walk away and say move out on my deck, I go back down to one or no bars. I guess I can say I have been less than impressed with it. The $100 rebate helped though

What about the third party signal boosters on the market? They do not require an internet connection and they simply repeat the signal that their antenna receives. Essentially, you place the antenna in the best location to receive a signal then run the cord to wherever you want to put the physical box (near an electrical outlet of course). Then, it grabs the signal it receives and repeats it up to a certain distance, depending on a variety of environmental factors of course. The cost for the unit id about the same as the Verizon one, but you do not have to have an internet connection, there is no extra cost for using it, and most of them work for a variety of carriers, not just Verizon, so when you have guests that may not be verizon customers, they can get a better signal in your house as well. Now, it will not improve call quality if the signal to the antenna is very weak, but it will improve battery life as the phone does not have to work as hard to maintain the signal and it will lessen the amount of dropped calls as long as you are in range of the repeater. I personally have not tried it yet, but have heard good things about it and am seriously considering one for my apartment as the signal is by no means consistent (might get 3-4 bars in one spot and nothing a short distance from that spot).

It's $49.99 and creates a 4-6 foot zone around the antenna where I get 1 to 3 bars more than I would normally get (My apartment is a huge dead zone, In most areas, I'm lucky to get one bar.) It has three main components, the receiver, the antenna and the plug. The receiver is placed on a window, with supplied suction cups, were you have at least one bar of service and the antenna has to be placed about 10 feet away from the receiver, to avoid a loop. Normally, I'll just set the phone down next to the antenna and use a bluetooth headset so I'm not tied to that area.



My initial experience with the booster was not good. It would continually stop working and within about a week, it was totally dead. I was just going to return it and get my money back, but I decided to to contact the company directly to see if they would help me first. I sent them an email and was surprised to get a response back in less than 24 hours. They asked for the serial number off of the product and my information and told me that they would replace it under warranty. I sent it back to them and received a new one it about a week and a half. I've had the new one for about two weeks now and I have no complaints at all.
