I downloaded Handcent SMS and really like it but every time I get a text, I get it twice. Is there a way to disable the preinstalled messaging app?

Turn off notifications for the stock Message App in Settings > Sounds & display.

If I go to the main screen settings>sound & display it has an option for notification ringtone but not for sending notifications. If I open up messaging>settings>sound&display notifications is already unchecked. But even so, if someone sends me a text I will get the notification box and then about three seconds later I will get another one. Not a big really, just a nuisance if I am trying to do something else.

I did what Ak8s suggested except I unchecked all the options. Haven't had a issue since.

I'm gettin lost here somewhere. From "home screen" open menu? There is not "applications" under that menu. If I go to "settings" then I have apps but when I open that I don't find messenger there.

I didn't think I was this dense! What am I missing?

If you are on your home screen and you press the menu button it shows (at least on my phone) the options add item, set wallpaper, search, applications, preferences, settings. Choose applications (eyeball looking icon LOL) and go from there.

    1. Try opening the default message app. Press the menu button. Press settings. Scroll down and uncheck Notifications.

    Or

    2. In Applications, go into manage applications, press the menu button, touch Filter, select All. You should then see the message app in the list.
