This will be a long post, so please bear with me. It's an involved problem and I'm going to include a little background.

First of all, I've always said I would never root my phone. It just seemed too high a risk to take. But, for reasons I might explain in another post, Three days ago I did use z4root to root my ally. I then downloaded Titanium Backup and a CPU acceleration app. Using Ti, I first created a backup, then started deleting the preinstalled "crapware." I uninstalled one program too many -- google talk. After that, I developed a problem with the gapps process and my phone would no longer download apps from the Market or receive gmail.

I found a solution to the gapps problem online, fixed that problem, unrooted my phone and did a factory reset. Everything worked perfectly. I reinstalled all the apps I had purchased. I left the three downloaded "superuser" apps on the SD card.

The phone was once again performing flawlessly; better, in fact, than it had prior to rooting it, because the factory update fixed a couple of little errors (corruptions) that had been cropping up for a month or so, but didn't seem to interfere with the normal operations.

Then, at 5:30 this morning, I got the notification that a system update was available. It was froyo. I had given up on the froyo update; that's one of the reasons I rooted the phone. But that's for that other post I mentioned.

Back on point: The update was very brief, probably less than two minutes. It had, in fact, failed, and I was still on 2.1. :-(

I didn't have time to deal with it this morning, but when I got home the first thing I did was come here to confirm that indeed I did not have 2.2. So I decided to do another factory reset to see if it would download 2.2 out of the box, so to speak. I noticed that when I did the first factory reset (probably Friday morning, the one right before it tried to push froyo to my phone), the one "maintenance update," released maybe in October, was installed at the same time, so I figured now that the OTA froyo was trying to get to my phone, a factory reset might take care of it.

During the post-froyo factory reset, however, I did get a yellow triangle with an exclamation point that ended that part of the setup. Setup continued and eventually I got the factory homescreens. But I was still on eclair. So I decided to try to uninstall the Ti backups stored on the sd card, figuring that might somehow be influencing the download. Then I got three warnings that gapps process had failed. Then I got a notice that I once again had system update available. This was all before i had had a chance to delete the Ti backup, but it prompted, so I went with it.

Again it failed. Now the phone is basically once again back to out-of-the box. I went into the SD card and opened the download that contained the gapps fix (basically, installing three apk files in a certain order), restarted the phone and -- voila -- no gapps process error. Then I went back into the SD card and deleted the Ti backup.

Now, I guess I'm patiently waiting to be prompted again by an OTA update.

    Now, my questions:

Does anyone have any idea whether I've totally screwed myself on this one? Are there vestiges of the rooting procedure that could still be causing the froyo download to fail? If so, is there a workaround? Will Google/LG continue to try to push froyo to me OTA? If so, I'll keep trying to get it, of course, but will I be just wasting my time.

I have an old SD card, one that I removed before rooting the phone. Should I switch cards temporarily?

Any constructive thoughts are appreciated more than I can say. I can't believe if I had just... waited... three... days...

Let me end by saying that I have learned my lesson on rooting. Sincerely, don't. If you do, good luck and may the phone gods be with you.

Rooting is not your issue so suggesting others not do it is silly. I was rooted and the OTA installed fine.

Your problem is your phone no longer has the files\apps that are required for the OTA process to work properly. In order for the OTA's to work, you need to have all of the preinstalled apps on the phone and be using the stock recovery image. That includes all of the apps that came with the phone originally and all of the ones added with each incremental update. If you removed any of those, the update will fail. And doing a factory reset does not put those apps back on the phone. You also need to go back to the stock recovery if you have flashed an alternate recovery like ClockworkMod or Aloha. I would suggest you follow the steps in the link below to set the phone back to stock. Then you will have to go through the VZ8, VZB and VZC updates before the VZD (Froyo) update will finish. Don't worry, the whole process takes about 30 minutes to get back to VZC and be ready for the Froyo update. If you have not installed a custom recovery, like Aloha or ClockWorkMod, you can skip the part about flashing back to the stock recovery. If you have installed a custom recovery, then you will need to do the last steps. There is a simple .zip file for flashing back to recovery floating around that forum, so I would suggest finding it. It's much easier than using the terminal commands.

Joe, I am so lost on this one. I have not flashed an alternate recovery (I barely understand what that means!).

I followed the link you posted, and it sounds like what I need to do is the section headed "Got the stock rom running, but need stock recovery to get OTA updates?" But I have some real newbie questions, or at least entry-level questions. I'm sure you or someone else can help me out.

    1) when it says I need the Android SDK, then it give a link, and says "extract zip to root of your c: drive!," am I doing this on my phone or on a computer? If I'm doing this on a desktop, I'm in trouble, because I'm on a mac, and the whole "c drive" thing doesn't really apply, at least to my knowledge. If I'm doing it on my phone, how in the world do I get to the c drive? (OK, having done a bit more research, it seems I need to have my phone physically tethered to a pc. Fortunately, I have access to a pc at my house, so I can do that.)

Reading through the rest of the instructions, I think I can handle them on a pc. I guess my only question is where do I find "device manager" on a pc running windows 7? I've never really used 7; I think I can figure it out, though...

This is SO frustrating. sigh... Thanks, though, for your help. I think you've definitely got me on the right track, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. :-)

And you're right: Rooting wasn't my problem. My problem was that I removed something I should not have.

If you have not flashed an alternate recovery, then you don't need to do the second set of steps (Got the stock rom running, but need stock recovery to get OTA updates?). You need to do the first set of steps. Those are the ones to follow if you have removed preinstalled apps. To answer your question though, it means the root drive on your computer, but again, you are doing the steps you don't need to do based on what you have said. Follow the first set of steps and you should be able to get the phone back to the factory stock condition.

For the device manager, go into the control panel and double click the system icon. If you don't have one, you'll need to change the view to classic view or large icons in order to see them all. MS changed the default view for the control panel back in Vista. Once the system properties opens, one of the options on the left will be for the device manager.

I'll try to be avialable as much as possible today in case you run into problems. I've done the factory reset a number of times so i've become pretty good at it and should be able to help. Although i've never done it in Windows 7 so I don't know how different it might be.

Well, Joe, this is where I am:

I'm using my work pc (an old laptop running xp) and I've gotten to step 11. my computer says it's loading, as the instructions say, but I haven't seen a manual uploader screen on my phone. Indeed, I haven't seen anything on my phone, no signs of anything happening. This has been going on for probably five minutes. The only thing that's happening with my phone is that when i wake it up, it's on the charging screen. So it's not bricked, but it doesn't seem like I'm having any effect.

Sounds to me like you might not have usb debugging enabled and\or the drivers or LG Updater program didn't install properly. On the page I gave you with the directions, there are an alternate set of drivers to use for the phone drivers. Look below the part about the LG Updater w\Ally drivers. I think it says LGAndroidDrivers. Use those drivers instead. I never had luck with the other ones. Plug the phone into the computer with usb debugging enabled and then run the LGAndroidDrivers install program. When it's done, go to the device manager and make sure you don't have any devices related to your phone listed with yellow exclamation ponits. Also, be certain that you installed the LG Update Manager program. If all of those things are in order, the rest should go through without a hitch.

EDIT: I also found this alternate way to get back to stock. I just tried it to make sure it worked and it does. Even got the first update notice about two minutes after it completed: Alternate way to get back to Stock
