Think of it this way: Your room (phone) has two file cabinets (phone memory -smaller, and SD card - larger). When you download an app it goes into the smaller file cabinet. When you use the app you make a temporary copy and look at that, the original app remains in the file cabinet. If you make changes to the file you can keep that one (in the same place) and throw out the old version. That small cabinet fills up fast so to make space you decide to move the file from the small cabinet (the phone) to the larger cabinet (the SD card). A small bit remains in the smaller cabinet to tell you where the app is now.

Does that help visualize what happens when you move a file to the SD card? If not I'll try again to make it easier to understand. If too simple sorry but I'm trying to use terms everyone can understand.

Next question: What happens when you formate your SD card? Just like formating the hard drive on your computer everything goes. So you need to back everything you want to keep up before formating the SD card.Think of a blackboard at school. Things are written on it. When the board is washed those things are washed away so hopefully you have written down what you wanted to keep before it was washed.

Thanks, I get it. I'm just frustrated because I can't seem to really *use* the SD card space I have and my apps keep filling up the phone. I've moved what I can, but have run into problems with that (with apps and icons disappearing, for example). Searching here I've found suggestions to format the SD card to fix issues like that, but I'm not going to go there if I'd have to start from scratch with downloading everything.

Is there any way to increase the memory in the *phone*? I have 3 gigs of empty space in the SD card that's doing me no good whatsoever. And I keep having to uninstall apps to gain space back in the phone.
