Hello, after not getting answers or any sort of help on other android forums, I figured I'd come pick you guy's brains.
My battery took a dump and I was curious if there is a way to prevent the phone from shutting down without the battery installed.
Or if I could circumvent the use genuine battery message altogether, and not have to replace it, that'd be awesome too.
The battery holds a charge and powers a crappy Metro LG that takes the same battery.

It depends on the phone. The only way to tell would be to connect the charger and then remove the battery. If the phone stays on, you are good but you would have to keep the phone connected at all times. If not, the phone won't work without a battery.
