Visual Voicemail is a scam IMO. It costs money. NO THANKS!
You can also get a Google Voice number for free, and use Google Voice's voicemail. GV can E-mail or text you your voicemails but it is not always accurate. It was mostly very good when I tested it many moons ago, but accuracy was a common critique. I have since stopped using it but really only for lack of necessity

I use Visual Voicemail. It does cost an extra $1.99 a month but I like it.

In order to recover lost voicemails of iPhone, you can read the following steps:
1. Launch the Phone application- iPhone Data Recovery
2. Go to the dial pad
3. Press and hold 1 to access your voice mail the old fashioned way
4. Check your messages
5. End the call to voice mail
Using another phone call your iPhone and leave a message
1. Launch the Settings app
2. Select General
3. Select Reset
4. Select Reset Network Settings
5. Allow the iPhone to reboot
