Thanks to the 'Definitive file structure" thread I moved a bunch of music, ringtones, event sounds and a couple of movies over to the Ally.
All the audio stuff works great, but I have an issue with the vid/movies.
A quick search turned up the thread that goes over the supported movie/vid file types, so I know the Ally plays .WMV files.
I loaded a little 30 sec .WMV of a lady with a hula-hoop that works great, LOL!
I also loaded my digital copy of Star Trek X, the smaller file for 'portable devices', also a .WMV file. No dice, won't play, I get a 'Cannot Play Video" message.
I deleted the file, jiggered the file structure a bit, put it in it's own folder...still no luck, same failure message.
Then, as an experiment, I moved a copy of the sample vid from Windows 7, the one with the horses, nice clear vid, also .WMV. Nada, same as Trek.
Any clues? Is there a file size limit for movies? Does the Ally only play porn movies? Perhaps there's an app that plays movies?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like a permissions issue. The Ally may not have the correct permissions to run them. But other than that, I don't have a clue.
It plays Youtube videos. I think Google would have problems is it didn't do at least that.
Thanks. When I get back into town I'll try to cut-paste instead of copy or drag n drop.
I'll also try a few moer vids too and report back.

There should not be a problem with length but there can be a problem with size, like, if the video is bigger than your screen.
The phone came with DivX registration. You can download their free movie converter. You'll need the registration code in the phone (Settings > About Phone > DivX VOD registration). I tried messing with their converter but I did not try to convert full length movies or copy protected movies yet. I use HandBrake, which is open source. The difference is that DivX is supposed to allow the conversion of protected material. I wasn't sure if I was to buy that content from them though. I didn't spend enough time with the program, maybe.
Ok, that was a lot of words you just said there...LOL! Thanks Q, next chance I get I'll try foolin with the Divx and handbrake software. Steep learning curve here.
I did try a few things the other night. One was - cut and paste vids from my computer. Out of 7 good vids, none worked on the ally. Most of this stuff from the old days, before any copy protection crap (I'm old),
I also tried a couple of free media player apps. Epic fail.
Honestly, I don't really need vids, at this point I'm just curious why the only vid that will play is the lady with the hula hoop!

Its only one of two things here. Either the video contains video/audio codec that the phone does not play OR the video has DRM protection.
If its a codec issue then you will need to re-encode the video. Use h264 codec in MP4 container for the video, use MP3 for the audio. The easiest app I have found for converting videos for my Ally that works great is called ipodme. Keep in mind that any app that converts video for iphone/ipod will work on your Ally as h264 is supported by both devices. Also keep in mind that h264 offers better compression than divx/xvid so you get better quality with smaller file sizes..
If its a DRM issue then you are on your own. I am not going to tell you how to bypass the DRM but if you search the internet you will find a million and one ways to do it.

Nevermind - cannot find it in the market anymore, but I did find the following link:
I have had it for a few months. My version is 3.2 and it is now up to 4.1
It isn't very user friendly and there are no forward/back but there is File (search for your file) PL (play) Ps (pause) St(stop) and it has yet to deny me a video.
