Move Maps & YouTube to the SD Card

I managed to free up some internal space by moving Maps, Voice Search, Google Search, and YouTube to the SD Card.
(Only works with those apps which re-downloadable from the market)

First, you MUST have a rooted phone.
Install Move2SD Enabler with External enabled and a file explorer with similar functionality to Root Explorer (ability to r/w system folders).
    I personally use Root Explorer.

Not required, but I also use App 2 SD (the app). I find it very handy and a better overview of moveable apps than the built-in app manager.

Go into the /system/app folder and delete the apk's.
Also go into the /data/app folder and delete the update apk's
Reboot into recovery and wipe the dalvik-cache.
    Reboot the phone.
Go into the Market and redownload the removed apps.
They should now be installed on your SD card freeing up a little bit more internal space on your phone.

Can this be done with any app?

Only apps that can be redownloaded via the market. I would not recommend trying this with irreplaceable system apps.

I do this but when I try to delete the apk files it says the file is read only. How can I get this move to SD it's causing my phone to run out of space regularly and I only have FB, Mail, contacts and Maps on internal memory.

    Thanks,

    Flavia

Yes...I had that done too. The instructions didn't mention that one needs to mount to R/W before trying to delete. Did that and now I have only Market on internal memory.
AND still only 30MB free out of the 147.62 MB available..WTH?

I love android and love my HTC Desire but the lack of internal memory just sucks.

What if I cant go into recovery to delete dalvik-cache?

I used gingerbreak 1.2 to root my phone...& no custom ROM installed yet.

Great info, I think I may have messed this up somehow, works for most apps but gmail and streetview, when trying to reinstall these 2 I get an error "application cannot be installed in the default location" any ideas?

I searched online to move files from my internal memory to sd card and this post did the trick. The only thing that surprised me is I guess the .apk files automatically load back into the internal memory but the apps I moved were on the sd card (YouTube, Voice Search and Maps). I would have moved Google Search as well, but I wasn't sure which .apk file it was, so I left it on the phone for the time being. The phone said I had 32 mb in internal memory, now it is showing 23 mb. All in all I'm still happy having more phone memory, but is there more I can do other than installing a custom ROM (which, honestly, I think is a bit over my head). I'm hoping to move to an Optimus Slider, so I'm not in a hurry to add more to this phone. I do want to thank the original poster for the information.
