installing apps not in marketplace
So AT&T has locked the phone down so you can't install any apps from your sd card or over the air. You can only install apps from the market place.
But there is a way around this. You have to install through ADB method, which is outline below, courtesy of forum.xda-developers.com.
1. DOWNLOAD USB DRIVERS
Motorola ADB Driver 32bit
Motorola ADB Driver 64bit
2. INSTALL THE SDK
-Download latest SDK http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
-Extract Archive to C:\SDK\ (or C:\Android, or whatever you want)
3. Enable debugging on your phone
-Goto Settings > Applications > Development > and Check the USB debugging option
Now connect your phone to your computer.
4. Open the command prompt and navigate to adb (located in the tools folder of the directory of the SDK, EX: I moved my directory to C:\Android)
Use the following command from the windows command utility by going to start, run, cmd:
adb install appliction.apk (launch this command from the directory that ADB.exe is installed in which was explained above) *replace application to the above application.apk to the actual name of the program you are trying to install*
(You need to have your apk file in the same directory as the adb executable for this to work properly)
If for some reason you can't figure it out, install the drivers then try this installation guide: ADB For Dummies Guide

Sweet, thanks for the post. I'm going to sticky this.
I noticed that each .zip contains a .msi file. Is there a download for a hack that will work on a Mac?
You should be able to download and use the Mac version of the SDK. The SDK is available for Windows, Mac, AND Linux.
That's a good how-to for installing the programs, but I was lost when I tried to use SDK.
I found this page
Android Debug Bridge | Android Developers
but I still never got my phone to show up.
Any chance of a step by step how-to for us noobs that are adventurous enough to install apps this way, but don't have much clue what they're actually doing?
After hacking the crap out of a samsung eternity, I was excited to move over to Android, and kinda pissed when I found out AT&T had limited me on what I can put on! But I'm thinking I can live with it if I can get this to work.
The page you referenced is exactly what I have above. You do not HAVE to use the SDK just the ADB method which is explained above. Also I linked to the ADB for dummies guide which should help as well.

thanks batmania15, I don't know what I was doing wrong yesterday, but I got it working this time!
I have been using this method on my pre released backflip for about a week now and it works great.
I just snatched this up from xda-developers.com
Install Google Voice Search
Here is how to get Google's Voice Search on your backflip:
This may not be the fix to 100% google search over yahoo that we need yet, but it is a start in the right direction.
1. Download the VoiceSearch_1.5.apk from here:
Follow the install by ADB steps in my previous post
Once installed, reboot the phone. (DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP)
Now you can add the voice search to your home screen and voice search by google. Once I have the google search bar working I'll post that too
If you get Force Close messages when you try and run it,
2.Reboot (DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP)
3.Reinstall and wait 30 seconds (un plug from computer)
4.Reboot (DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP)
5.Let everything start and try again

Any more information on if this truly works or not.
