Not a definite no, but it's not likely. There's some discussion that the exploit can be modified some to work on the Backflip, but I think it's a long shot at this point.

The Droid X root exploit requires etc/firmware which the Backflip does not have.

If this exploit pans out, I say the root bounty should go to that Steven Bird guy.

So in case anybody missed it the devour was rooted this way. MotoBlur 1.6 not 1.5 like the backflips, but maybe it could be possible with a little editing.

We can haz Devour root now. Instructions inside. XD - Android Central Forums

Maybe someone should make the author of this exploit aware of the bounty? $$$ is a great motivator :D

That exploit also requires /etc/firmware and that's the main part that the backflip is missing for the original exploit.

According to the author of the exploit (known as "exploid") - besides "/etc/firmware" one might try using any world-writable character device, including usb, graphics, block, char, sound or mtd.

I just reinstalled my netbook's operating system, so as soon as I can get the Android/arm-eabi cross-compile toolchain installed again, I will try compiling this exploit with the different vectors as described above. The author believes that it is definitely possible. I will keep you posted on my progress.

If you can compile it, you can test it. But, I don't know which IDE works with the Android SDK yet.

    Use Eclipse IDE:
    Eclipse Downloads

and get the plugin from Google (instructions): Android SDK | Android Developers
