if you feel like you cant do it, dont do it. You atleast need some kind of terminal/command prompt knowledge.

If you go ahead with rooting, all you need is you computer(mac or pc will work) your phone, and its cord. along with the drivers, etc. then download the required files, and follow the instructions. if you have any problems, just post them here.

When can we expect a functioning 2.1 ROM for the Backflip?

Late Q3/early Q4 according to motorola.
Seriusly now, many of the people working on it don't even seem to have backflips, try to be a little patient. We've only had root for 3 days...

Man, along with my phone running faster, Gameboid doesn't lag at all. Originally, 2 of the 3 roms I put on my phone lagged like none other. I'm still amazed how much removing the AT&T apps alone helped this phone.

:motorola: Very cool! Just got mine rooted, and it is amazing how actually installing the motorola drivers(instead of just downloading them) works so much better! Thanks for all of the hard work guys

Just a quick thank you to amingv for his root method. Worked Flawlessly.
I actually rooted the night before last, loving the crap out of having root.

So I tried the bootloader and fixed permissions, but it's a no-go on the baseband radio. It's just not working anymore. I'm flashing the original software back to it, to make sure, before I call AT&T.

    Weird Problem

I have a weird problem. I rooted the phone, but I seem to lose root permission every time I turn it off and on. How do I get the phone to *stay* rooted?

Were you able to run the ootc.sh step successfully? If you did then you wont have root by default when you open the terminal, but you can become root by typing "su" on it (see picture on post right after the instructions).

As far as I could tell, everything worked, and I did have root. When I type su into the terminal, it just puts me to a new line with the $ in front. No #, and no root.
