    Building custom ROMs

If you brick it, don't blame me.

With that said, I ran accross a tutorial for an HTC only (maybe) ROM kitchen at:

How To: Create Your Own Custom ROM for Android, Part 1

I followed the instructions to the letter and installed the virtual box and Ubuntu on my Win 7 machine. Then I got the ROM kitchen from the XDA post and got it installed.

You need either the shipped ROM or another custom ROM to load into the kitchen to do your mods. Without either of those I pulled my boot and system .img files from my Nandroid backup and loaded those. The developer's post on XDA does not recommend this so I immediately did it anyway.

The first thing that the kitchen program reported was that my files were not "fully rooted" and merrily went about doing something that I suppose fully rooted my boot and system files.

Once I made my changes to what was to be my custom ROM the script compiled everything into a .zip file with the signature as the file name. I renamed it update.zip and put it on the sdcard.

Without wiping, I flashed the new ROM (J_r0dd's tool) and it worked. I didn't seem to lose any functionality, no error msgs or FC's.

If anyone wants to go the same route and give this a shot I would suggest leaving the blur stuff alone at the moment.

Any question I can answer on this will be found in the instructions at www.theunlockr.com

Interesting. What changes were you able to successfully make to the ROM?

I suggest posting this over at the ModMyMobile forums as well.

It is indeed an easy process I am not man enough at this time to reflash my device with the zip tile I generated. I am at this time not sure of the value of this repackage . It seems to allow you to Customise apps that could be loaded by default and I think some of the other modes might be risky...

Here is the breakdown of options.. I would be a bit leary of some of these... It is supposed to be HTC only..
