Also, if you end up with a framework-res.apk too large to fit on the device, you can compress your PNGs online at PunyPNG - PNG Compression and Image Optimization - Gracepoint After Five.

Any time I decompile/recompile an apk and edit some of the xml (nothing bug just changing color codes) my phone goes into this crazy spree where everything crashes repetedly on startup. Any Ideas?

Ive tried apktool and apk manager and both just dont seem to work.
Sorry, haven't played with it yet. Is it any APK or the framework? You're recompiling it with the correct signature right?

Ive tried with blurhome.apk and framework-res.apk, both do the same thing
from what ive read, system apks dont need to be signed, but ive tried signed and unsigned, it doesnt seem to matter either way

well Im moving so I wont be able to do much of anything over the next few days

But if you cant afford photoshop, you should try Gimp
Ive heard its a really good, free, photoshop alternative.

GIMP is awesome in that its free and does pretty much whatever Photoshop can. If youre just making/editing images in RGB format its perfect. Its one fault is, it doesnt do CMYK color so its no good for actual press work but we dont need to worry about that for bootscreens..

While browsing through the framework folder, I also noticed that all the icons and what not are under /res/drawable. Is it possible to change these icons to our liking?

Ive actually been experimenting with that myself
Some of them (like the battery icon for example) ive been able to edit as well as a few other random things
Some of the images dont display properly when I open them in photoshop though so Im not quite sure how to handle those
