Ubuntu's default network-manager doesn't play nice with ad-hoc wifi networks. You have to manually configure things (using a script) on the ubuntu client side. Details at my blog post here: Backflip wifi tether with Ubuntu Linux — Jay’s Technical Talk

Basically it makes your phone to act like a Wifi hotspot so you can tether your PC or iPod or whatever and use your phone as a modem. Basically it's like the Internet Connection Sharing on Windows.

sounds cool and 2 more questions....

im guessing that you could use this method for PS3 or possible?

and using your phone to share the internet like that wouldn't it raise your data bill?

It would count against the data for your plan. That's one reason why some people (myself included) wanted to keep their unlimited data plans even though we could save a buck or two by dropping to the 200mb/mo or 2gb/mo plans.
