See this post for a mod you can install to enable the installation for non-market apps.

followed the directions. even did the unsecured boot.image. when in recovery mode it still says security on, fastboot disabled.

Ok I tried several times to get into recovery mode by hitting camera button at reboot. It always didthe same thing security on. I then tried reboot recovery from adb shell. I backed up and installed the signed*hax.zip it went no problem but I still can't install non market apps

Doh got it working just tired it again. Gave me the security error but another window came up and there was a selection to install nonmarket apps. I can also go into recovery mode by opening up a term. Su. Reboot recovery. I wonder. Why it won't work from reboot and camera button.

Why not just upgrade to 2.1?

lol actaully that was pretty easy(updating to 2.1). I thought it must be tough with all the questions people ask and cant upgrade their phones. turns out they just cant follow directions. and in the case of rooting, there are probably 3 or 4 different things to do, none of them hard they just need to consolidate. I still havent figured out why my recovery doesnt work from bootup, camera button.

    Could you define doesn't work?

As for rooting and such, yeah pretty simple if people just read the directions but these days to many people lack the patience and want everything done for them.

doh, i think i screwed it up now. i decided to convert to ext3 now it just sits at the robot bootscreen. i can get it into recovery mode using the button method. the commands are opposite with the volume keys. btw I guess the os gets installed on the card. i thought it got installed interally to the phone. I am screwed until i get home and connect this to a computer. I wonder if its possible to take the microcard and plug it into a pc copy the preclair zip to it? in recovery mode, could it install the zip file from the msdos partition?
