That's actually what MarketEnabler is for since he's already rooted if he's trying to use Barnacle tether. Basically MarketEnabler spoofs the SIM for T-Mo since they don't censor their Market. It's safe and only temporary, going away after a reboot or just enabling Airplane mode.
For non-rooted phones, your right that the only real way of accessing tethering apps in the Market is to pull the battery and remove the SIM and then connect to the Market with the SIM out of the phone.
