    Gmail Notifications

Yesterday, for no reason I could see, my Backflip just stopped checking for / notifying me of new Gmail messages. Ever since I've owned it (I bought it the first day it was available), because I have Settings - Google synchronization - Background data, Auto-sync, and Gmail all turned on, when I get new Gmail, phone instantly made a noise and displayed "@" symbol top-left. It would stay that way until I opened the Gmail app and then the "@" symbol would clear until I received another new message.

Now, there're only two ways to make the "@" symbol appear: open Gmail app and do Menu - Refresh OR do Settings - Google synchronization, un-check and re-check Auto-sync or Gmail. (When I do that last, it'll check for new Gmail once and then stop.)

Here's what I tried to fix it:
    1. Power-off and power-on
    2. Remove and replace battery
    3. Chat with AT&T support -> perform a master/factory-reset
    4. Go to AT&T store, get on phone with AT&T warranty replacement -> perform another master/factory-reset

None of that worked. AT&T warranty replacement is sending me a new Backflip.

    Anyone else seeing this problem?

Anyone have any guesses as to whether new Backflip will fix this problem?

P.S. It looks like I am not the only one: https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/39929 What's going on?

Well, replacement Backflip did not fix the issue so...

About ready to abandon some combination of Backflip/AT&T/Android.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

I believe the trouble may be Google. I was having some issues with GMail's IMAP service yesterday (not at home to try today). Seriously though, if you've had the problem with 2 different phones, chances are it's the provider, ie. Google/GMail that is the issue. Especially since it was working before.

I understand the logic. So what do I do now?

Right. I don't even know that they know that there's trouble.

Correction: apparently, they do know that there's trouble: Google not syncing Email. Not notifications nothing - Google Mobile Help

See Gmail Known Issues - Gmail Help It appears that they are aware of some issues with POP3/IMAP.

IMAP clients timeout or crash when downloading very large folders

IMAP clients aren't always designed to handle the huge amount of mail that users store in Gmail. If you have thousands of messages in your labels, we recommend doing some housework to clean up your labels in the web interface. Remember, the web interface shows counts of threads, not messages.
    'Too many simultaneous connections'

We've aware of an issue where users are receiving a 'too many simultaneous connections' message when using IMAP. We are currently looking into this issue. In the meantime, please ensure you've closed/signed out of any mail clients you are not actively using.

Gmail <-> Android auto-sync does not use POP3/IMAP, does it?
