There is a proximity sensor in the phone that turns the screen off when it detects the phone is close to your face/head to keep you from accidentally hitting buttons. It should turn the screen back on if you take the phone away.

If you're talking about the normal screen timeout, that can be changed under the display settings.

mine never turns back on when I remove it from my face, i found when I have to make calls that require dial trees, I just leave it on speaker.

    Try Keepscreen

I used keepscreen to keep the dialer screen open for when I need to press keys. It stops the timeout but not the blank screen when you put the phone to your ear. Solves part of the problem

I do this too, figured it out after a few calls that required me to press numbers were messed up 'cos of that issue. It is very annoying.
