    J_r0dd vs moto

Can someone who's used both give pros and cons for each? I'd also like to know if moto's 2.1 is rootable, because if it is, it's probably the better choice, but I'd like some feedback please

moto's 2.1 is actually 2.1, not a rip of another phones os and patched together to work. i would wait untill an updated rom comes out based of 2.1 from moto, then i would love to see a comparison.

Wow. That was harsher than even I usually am. Actually j_r0dd's ROM is based on the leaked "soak" release of Motorola's 2.1 release for the Backflip. I can't speak to what issues there may be with that, but it has been modified. It is rooted (obviously) and allows the installation of non-market apps. It also has removed nearly all of the ATT apps (I believe the Wifi Hotspot app is the only one left), and I believe it includes the Froyo versions of the Google apps. It also allows for running/installing apps to the sdcard which isn't officially supported by Android until 2.2 (Froyo).

Some or most of this can be accomplished yourself with just the stock Motorola release if one so desired to have those modifications. Unless you really want to tinker with your phone, I'd probably suggest just using the stock firmware. Also remember that using unsupported software on the phone can void your warranty.

I'm not sure. I haven't tried it. But I do know that to run j_r0dd's ROM, you need root. Once you root it, follow the instructions here: ModMyMobile Forums - View Single Post - [ROM] Preclair v1.0.2 [11.5.10].

Also, the dependencies/permissions have been modified and fixed. Sometimes when you remove or delete an app, it will have dependencies on other apps and when the app that is trying to run has dependencies on other apps that have been removed or deleted, you end up getting a lot of force closes, or freezes or sometimes the phone flat out will just hang at the Moto boot screen. So j_rodd's ROM has been modified a little more than skin deep. With the beta releases he was working with a Cliq's kernel & 2.1 framework. Right now he's working with the beta 2.1 that's actually designed for the Backflip, with a 2.1 kernel also for the Backflip that provides a fully functioning OpenGL framework. Besides that, and since the ATT crapware has been removed, he's optimized memory usages all over the place.

Overall if you don't know or recognize what all j_rodd has done to the ROM, then it probably wouldn't mean much to you to switch to it, because even it still has MotoBlur. It's just a TON more optimized for it's functionality than the stock ROM is. (Plus with rooting, you can make NANDROID images of your installations.)
